I spend a lot of time wondering about inquiry: What attitudes are required for inquiry? What makes an inquisitive episode excellent? What are its success conditions? Can it bear value if these success conditions are not met? These theoretical questions take on a practical guise when applied to a pedagogical context: How can I create the conditions for students to have inquisitive attitudes? What are the best ways to foster excellent inquiry? What are the possible barriers to such inquiry? How will students know when their inquiry has gone well, and what reflective strategies can allow them to adjust course if necessary?
My experience teaching philosophy is the most rewarding part of my academic experience. When it goes well, it requires attentive listening, empathy, intellectual improvisation, and care for the intellectual good of my students. Thus, my primary pedagogical goal is to create an environment where excellent, exhilarating philosophical inquiry is possible. Below are a few of the courses I have taught.
